Established and incorporated in 1976, the American Society of Orthopaedic Physician's Assistants (ASOPA) is an organization for physician extenders who specialize in orthopaedic Board-certified surgery. ASOPA members are usually employed by a Board-certified orthopaedic surgeon or by an orthopaedic facility.
The organization's primary purpose is to enhance the quality of patient care by providing professional development to orthopaedic physician's assistants through continuing education, certification, networking, publications and meeting with peers and other allied health professionals.
ASOPA represents OPAs on a larger scale within the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and The Bone and Joint Decade.

ASOPA 2008 Salary Survey
ASOPA is asking for your help in calculating the average salary for orthopaedic physician’s assistants based on factors such as geographic location, experience and certification. This survey will help ASOPA provide OPAs with a general idea of the salary range in their area. Results will be posted in a summer 2008 issue of the newsletter.
Participation is important. We want to get a true picture of salaries and benefits among OPAs across the country, so we will need a broad response to the survey. Your responses will be confidential. If you have any questions about the survey, please contact ASOPA at (800) 280-2390 or via email at asopa@hp-assoc.com. Deadline to complete the survey is April 18, 2008.

The Origin, History and Use of the Intramedullary Nail
Tim Witzigreuter, OPA-C, OTC
Through the years, many things have changed. I remember when you could rent your favorite movie on a “Beta Format,” make a phone call from a pay phone for a dime, and when someone said “mail” you automatically thought of the post office. Now movies are on compact discs, phone calls from pay phones now cost fifty cents, or are made with a prepaid card that has an allotted number of minutes. Now, instead of putting a stamp on an envelope, and taking it to the mailbox to wait on the postman, we go to the trusty computer, logon and, in a matter of seconds, send our letters, pictures, movies or cards to anyone in the world.
